Xmas in Siena is full of events and december is a good month to enjoy the town and its surroundings: Borgo Grondaie is here to suggest you the most interesting events for this magical period of the year! A month of lights and amusement, through shows and activities for everyone.
It starts immediately on the first day of the month, with the lights show through the city streets, and with the lighting of the majestic christmas tree in Piazza Salimbeni, thanks to the collaboration of Banca Monte dei Paschi.
On the 7th of December, in Piazza delle Poste, we’ll have the first Videomapping Projection, which will also take place on the next days, and from the 20th of december to the 6th of January, from 5pm to 7pm.
Same thing will happen on the 14th of December at 6pm, on the Palazzo Comunale in Piazza del Campo. A magical event thanks to the technology of Videomapping 3D, that will give a new festive style to the building. This event will happen again the next day (15th) at 8pm, and then again from the 20th to the 26th of december at 6pm and 8pm.
In the Lizza’s gardens, from the 16th of November to the 6th of January, 10am to 12pm and 3pm to 12am, “Il Paese dei Divertimenti” (Amusement Town), a place where everyone can have fun! There will be many attracitions, from the ice skating rink, also for beginners; the “bruco mela”, a roller coaster for kids and the “huge slide”. If you’re brave enough, there will also be the Apollo 13, an adrenaline attraction for adults. On the same dates, there will be the “Trenino di Natale” (Christmas Train): a special locomotive that works with electric traction, which will take you through the city streets from 10am to 8pm during ferial days and from 10am to mindnight on festive days.
On the 7th and 8th of December, from 8am to 8pm, in Piazza del Campo, there will be the famous “Mercato del Campo”, that will host 164 exhibitors, coming from all over Tuscany in memory of the Market which took place in the 1300’, when the Republic of Siena was still in effect. This year’s theme will be “aroma, essence and olive oil’s taste”. There will also be cooking workshops for kids, streetfood and cooking shows.
From the 16th of November to the 14th of December the “Villaggio di Babbo Natale” (Santa’s Village) will be set up, full of events in different locations.
The first one is “Il Regno di Babbo Natale” (Santa’s Kingdom): set in the Lizza’s gardens on the second half of November and almost everyday of december, from the 1st to the 24th, from 11am to 7pm, free entrance for kids under he age of 3, 5€ on Fridays; on Saturdays and Sundays, 5€ for kids from 3 to 10 years old and for handicapped people; 8€ for adults.
“Il Trucco delle Meraviglie” (Make up of wonders!) a room where you can get a festive make up, to feel even more the magic of Christmas; “La Fabbrica del Natale” (Christma’s Factory), where you can learn to craft some christmas decorations, thanks to the help of some Santa’s elves; “Il Mondo dei Balocchi” (Toy’s World), with toys and building blocks that kids can use; “La Regina dei Ghiacci” (Ice Queen) who will tell you her fables; “L’Ufficio Postale” (Post Office), where you can write your letter to Santa and mail it to Lapland; “La Stalla delle Renne” (The Reindeers Stable) and “La Casa di Babbo Natale” (Santa’s House), where you can find many sweets to eat.
At last, for the adults, there will be “Mercatino di Natale”, from th 16th of november to the 24th of december, where many little houses (that go from Lizza to Piazza Matteotti) will host some artisan that will show how they craft their works, and will sell some hand made nativity scenes.
Now we move to the end of the month, to talk about the New Year’s Eve and the New Year’s Day.
On the 31st of December, as the tradition wants, there will be the Countdown to New Year in Piazza del Campo, to say goodbye to 2019 and to welcome 2020.
On the 1st of January, in the Rozzi’s Theater at 5pm, there will be the concert of Tony Washington Gospel Singers, organized by Toscana Gospel Festival, to highlight the afroamerican tradition.
At last, on the 6th of January, you will spend Epiphany with the Firemen, who will help the Befana to land in Piazza del Campo at 17:30, giving treats to all the kids in the square. Moreover, here you can also buy the 2020’s firemen’s calendar, which proceeds will go to the Oncological Immunotherapy Center of the Hospital of Siena.
