FROM SIENA TO CASTEL SAN GIMIGNANO on the wine roads of Chianti and Vernaccia
The first route that we propose is heading west on the streets of Volterra, a windi road with big ups and downs and twists that open to incredible views. A perfect mix of fun, good food (there are numerous osterie both in Castellina and San Gimignano) and even tastings as you cross the area of production of the famous Vernaccia di San Gimignano!
All on the motorbikes and ready to go …
The tour starts from the Hotel, follow signs to Florence (in green) and you take the highway (two lanes) heading north and then immediately exit at Badesse
At the stop sign, turn left and you immediately get to Lornano on the SP119 road.
The SP119 will take you through one of the most beautiful scenery that the Chianti has to offer, especially if you happen to cross this area at sunset.
San Leonino crossed, you cross the SR222 – Chiantigiana Road, and here turn left towards Castellina in Chianti.
La Road Chiantigiana is one of the best to do in the motion; driving immediately becomes a lot of fun, thanks to a good asphalt and pretty fast corners, you get to Castellina very quickly.
For a wine stop, we recommend the Fonterutoli Castle which is on the Chiantigiana road. You can do tours of the cellars and wine tastings in the modern, futuristic basement in perfect contrast with the ancient history of the family and the medieval architecture of the castle. Do not drink too much…the Chianti wines here are great!
Keep riding on the Chiantigiana road, we recommend a quick stop in Castellina in Chianti to visit the historical center of the town.
On Saturday afternoon, around the main square, you can find many motorcyclists chatting or having a rest after a long ride on the beutiful Chianti Roads.
We carry on direction Poggibonsi following the SS429, a windy road with slightly downhill.
At Poggibonsi you have to be patient and unravel a bit ‘in traffic following the signs for San Gimignano.
Continue along the SP1 in the direction of San Gimignano. The skyline of the medieval town from far away is just amazing.
San Gimignano, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is famous for its medieval towers. Once they were 72, but today only 13 stand out from its walls, and they are still giving it the characteristic appearance of the medieval city.
In addition to a walk along the little streets of the village, we recommend a stop in the beautiful Well Square, and a visit to the Casa Torre Campatelli (Tower House) recently opened to the public and and free of charge for FAI members.
San Gimignano is worldwide famous not only for its unique architecture and its towers, but also for the production of Vernaccia di San Gimignano. It is a dry white wine, whose grapes are exclusively cultivated here. There are many wineries where you can do Vernaccia and Chianti tastings, especially on the road leading to San Gimignano.
The Guicciardini Strozzi Winery in Cusona (the signs for Cusona are just off the SP1 Pioggibonsi) is definitely one of the most famous and both the villa and gardens are worth visiting. You can book for a Tasting of its wide production of red and white wines in the historic cellars. The price is a bit ‘higher but the location is worth every euro!.
Next stop on our itinerary is Castel San Gimignano. Simply following the signs for Volterra, you carry on riding on the SP47,
The distance is only 12 km long, where short straights alternate with sweeping curves, broad and almost parabolic.
Castel San Gimignano is a small hill top village, where stands the medieval character and the imposing church .
We are ending our motorcyle tour, enjoying a Vernaccia wine tasting in a famous winery near Castel San Gimignano called il Palagio.
The beautiful tree-lined dirt road, as in the most classic Tuscan location, takes us to the Villa now owned by Zonin Famiy. The wine and olive oil tastings can be accompanied by a visit to the winery and a careful explanation of the wine production.
