The Market in Campo Square in Siena

The beginning of Christmas Time in Siena is indeed with The Market in Campo Square on Saturday  2nd and Sunday 3rd December.

It is more than a traditional Xmas market in Siena…

Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 December, in the beautiful frame of the “Piazza del Campo” will take place a big Market with local food, wines and handicrafts.

The market in the Campo Square in Siena allows us a make a step back in Middle Age.

In fact, in the fourteenth century the Campo Square was the real heart of the town and especially important for trade and social life.

Nowadays we have these two days to relive the atmosphere of the historic “Big Market” which was held once a week in the medieval Siena in XIV century.

It consists in nearly 150 stalls organised in the Square exactly how it was in XIV centuries and showing  the best products of the Sienese tradition as well as typical food  from Italy and Europe

This event was such a great success last year that they organised a Spring Market in Campo Square in April.  It was organised with seasonal products and a great choice of wines produced  in Siena territories.

Like every year there are guided tours of the city centre organized by the Siena guides as well as children’s activities promoted by Siena for Kids.
For wine lovers there is a special wine tasting area where you can enjoy a glass of Chianti or Brunello.

Our Tip:
wandering around  the stalls do not miss to taste typical Sienese sweets and cakes:

panpepato (gingerbread)
panforte (cake made of honey, candied fruits, almonds)

Ricciarelli ( soft almonds biscuits)
cavallucci (hard biscuits with nuts and anise flavour).

They are local products of the best bakeries  and made according to traditional recepies.
Especially at Christmas time you can find plenty of choice and the highest quality and freshness of products .
