SAN GIMIGNANO / VOLTERRA
San Gimignano, is a little walled city situated between Siena and Florence. It is really famous because of its medieval cityscape and for its 14 towers that beautify the entire city. In 1990 it was declared a Unesco World Heritage Site and for this reason, every year, it hosts a lot of tourists from all over the world.
Volterra is a lovely city, near to San Gimignano and Siena, well-known because it is an Etruscan city and it hosts a lot of archeological discoveries linked to this ancient population. Due to its amazing cityscape, but also because of the huge variety of typical products you can find in the city, Volterra it’s a popular tourist destination. Montepulciano is a Tuscan city recognized all over the world for the production of the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano (red wine). It is located 1968,5 ft above sea level and for this reason it is possible to enjoy a great view of the Tuscan hills and vineyards, by going up the city streets. If you want to enjoy a good glass of wine while admiring a spectacular view, Montepulciano is the right destination for you.
If you are an art and culture lover, Florence is the right place for you! Within the city you will find a huge number of interesting museums that you can’t absolutely miss! Exploring the city by foot is a gorgeous experience and it is the best way to discover all the hidden beauties of this city. Besides, Florence is well connected with Siena with daily buses or trains, so you can think about planning a day-trip and then come back to Siena during the same day.
CORTONA / TRASIMENO LAKE
Cortona is an Etruscan city, in which is still possible to admire the city wall that surrounded the ancient town. Cortona is located in a strategic position, only 72 km away from Siena, and it’s one of the main touristic destination of this area also because it was selected as set for the American film “Under the Tuscan Sun”, directed by Audrey Wells.
The Trasimeno Lake is a big lake – completely dipped in the nature – situated on the border netween Tuscany. If you are lucky, near the lake you will have the possibility to see animals like hedgehogs or boar that are typical of this area. It is also possible to enjoy lake bathing joining the bathing establishments situated near the lake.
Only one hour and half away from Siena, you can find sandy beaches and enjoy a great day just chilling on the beach. If you are in Siena without a car, you can reach the bathing establishments by daily bus and just relax. Some of the most famous seaside localities are Castiglione della Pescaia, Follonica or Marina di Grosseto and going there, you can also find a lot of camping areas, equipped to welcome the travelers.
If you are looking for a relaxing experience, you have to join one of the thermal establishments situated near Siena. There are at least 10 establishments, easily reachable by car or by bus, in which you can relax yourself and enjoy the view of the natural landscape. The different establishments are open both in summer and winter, so you have the possibility to enjoy the thermal water any time of the year.
