Why there will be an extraordinary Palio in Siena on October 20th?
How was the reaction of the Sienese people when a few days ago, the Mayor announced an Extraordinary Palio in Siena to held in less than a month? Happiness, Happiness and again Happiness…but also fear for the weather (it’s not summer indeed) and for the little time remaining to the date of the Festival.
An extraordinary Palio in Siena is something that happen very rarely and it is always related to important events. In the past they were held to celebrate a visit of important people (King/Queen/prime minister) or the anniversary of a war victory. The last Extraordinary Palio date back to 2000 ( September 9th) to celebrate the Jubilee of the new Millennium and it had been won by The Forest Contrada.
This year we celebrate the anniversary of the FWW so, this Palio will be full of historical contents and memories.
The youngest one maybe won’t understand the meaning and the symbols but the excitement for a new Palio will involve every one in the organisation.

What is the Palio Schedule for October?
October is a lovely month here in Tuscany. Weather is generally sunny and pretty warm about 18°/20° to wear a t-shirt during the day (and you won’t feel sticky like in august!). As it is autumn, we expect to have less light during the day (sunset is around 7pm) and therefore the time schedule of the Palio Race will be different to summer version.
The Palio Banner presentation will be held on October 14th inside the courtyard of Palazzo Pubblico.
The artist is Gian Marco Montesano and he is well renowed in Italy and abroad. The Theme of the Banner will be the First World War (1915-1918).
The Palio Festival will begin on October 17th with the selection of the horses followed in the afternoon by the first trial. Trials are every day at 10 am and 5 pm.
The Day before the race is very important for the Senese People. The last trial on October 19th has a spectacular parade of the Carabinieri with horses and it is followed by the big dinner along the streets of the contradas. Taking part to the dinner means breathing the real Palio atmosphere…singing the songs, drinking good wine awaiting for the next day race!
The Palio Day will stard with the blessing of the Horse and the Jockey early in the afternoon and an amazing parade
of all the contradas with flags and drummers inside the square.
The Palio race will take place on OCTOBER 20th at 5pm.
Borgo Grondaie is located about 1,5 Km away from Siena City Centre that you can reach within a pleasant walk of 25 minutes.
