Movies in Tuscany have always been famous thanks to the place being full of vast and various landscapes, going from deep forests, wide plains, and wonderful beaches. It could be an italian but also foreing movie, because the charm of our region is loved all over the world. Awarded movies with extraordinary casts, such as Twilight or Life is Beautiful.
Let’s start from Twilight (2009), for example, one of the most apreciated films by people of all the ages, inspired by one of the most famous fantasy books saga in the world. The final scene of the second movie of the saga is set in the wonderful square of Volterra, often used as a set for cinematographic shootings.
We now move to Arezzo, to talk about the second movie quoted before. One of the most famous and awarded movies in italy, winning 3 oscars: Life is Beautiful (1997). One of the most famous movies of the italian cinematography, which touches the delicate theme of the Hololcaust, containing at the same time the typical comedy of Roberto Benigni, actor and director.
Talking about tv series, we mention one of the most recent and famous anglo-italian series, set in Florence: I Medici (2016). As you can understand by the title, the series is about the most important family in Florence, the Medici, the house who reinged over the city during the Renaissence.
Back to the movies, let’s talk about the Gladiator (2000), one of the most famous american movies, with Russel Crowe as the main charachter, it has one of the most iconic scenes set in Tuscany, in the Val D’Orcia.
Another movie we must mention is Under the Tuscan Sun (2003), with Diane Lane. The movie is about the vacation of an american writer, a trip to discover herself after the break-up with his husband. The trip becomes a permanent stay as the woman, in love with Tuscan landscapes, decides to buy a Villa in Cortona.
The Last movie we will talk about is Romeo and Juliet (1968) by the great director Franco Zeffirelli, based on the homonym work by Shakespear. Famous for being the most loyal adaption to the original work and for having the principal actors with the same age as the character of the story. The film is set in various parts of Italy, and also in Pienza, in Tuscany, where the scene in which the two lovers first met was shot.
