Luca Festival in San Gusmé

Luca Festival in San Gusmé is a typical tuscan Festival.  San Gusmé is a tiny little village in the beautiful land of  Chianti. This festival takes place every first and second weekend of September (this year from 2 to 10th september) and it is very famous in the area as it is a mix of history, traditions, good food and of course good chianti wine!

Luca Festival in San Gusmè

The origin of the LUCA FESTIVAL dates back to 1972 when, Silvio Gigli, rediscovered the legend of Luca Cava. In 1888 a local farmer called Giovanni Bonechi, laid in his own land a stone statue that he carved himself. The statue represented a man (the artist) who was crouching and covering the intimate parts with his hat as he was about to carry out his bodily needs. The main objective of his initiative was obviously to try to keep the country clean at a time when no baths existed, neither in public places nor in private homes.

In the 1940s, some of the inhabitants of San Gusmè, tired of being scorned for the statue, dropped and threw the statue into a nearby lake. A few years later Silvio Gigli, who at that time was working in a Radio and in a local TV channel, discovered this story. As he knew that some of the people from San Gusmé didn’t want the statue, he called for a popular referendum to ask for the creation of a new “Luca” statue. After obtaining the consent of the population, the statue was reproduced on the design of the cartoonist Emilio Giannelli and was commissioned for its realization to Master Marcello Neri of Ceramics Santa Caterina of Siena.  To celebrate the new statue and the idea of “Equality in bodily functions”, born the LUCA FESTIVAL.

The program of this edition stands out for the trekking day on Sunday, September 3, to the discovery of the story of St. Gusmé, an interpretation by a monologue by Paolo Hendel at 9.30 pm on September 3rd, to continue with “Playing in History” the story of street games on Saturday 10 September in the country’s streets. On the last day of the festival, San Gusmè will be entertained with the tradition of Corsa dei Botti with the historical procession with  medieval clothes.
