The Mosaic Pavement of the Duomo- Siena

The Duomo Cathedral is considered one of the main attraction of the town of Siena as well as one of the most important gothic church in Italy. There are many reasons to visit it, but the time of the year when the mosaic marble pavement is uncovered is defitively a must.

The Mosaic Pavement of The Duomo: a real must if you come to Siena

The amazing marble pavement of the Duomo - Siena is going to be once again this year completely uncovered from June 26th to July 31th and from August 18th to October 3rd.

Why the mosaic pavement of the Duomo of Siena is so special?

Described by Vasari as the “most beautiful… grand and magnificent, major sections of the marble pavement are usually covered to protect them from the feet of the numerous visitors that enter the cathedral every day.

The pavement mosaics are truly amazing and unique, not just for the techniques used but also for message in many of them, which constantly evoke the search for Knowledge and faith of humanity.

Created between 1369 and 1547, the floor is made up of 56 scenes carved or inset in marble by some of the greatest Sienese artists  such as SassettaDomenico di BartoloMatteo di Giovanni and Domenico Beccafumi.

As great as complex because it took a long time to finish it. Infact the floor has been fully completed in the 1800s, more 600 years later.

Borgo Grondaie Siena recommends you not to miss the view of the pavement for the roof of the Duomo. Actually there is a new Tour inside the Duomo that allows visitors to see the mosaic pavement from above. It's called THE GATE OF HEAVEN and it's worth a visit!

This part of the Duomo, which represents the very top of the church, has been closed for several centuries and now is finally open to the public.

When visitors join the Gate of Heaven, they have the possibility to walk above the Cathedral’s naves, visit the roof, admire the interior beauties of the Duomo from above and, at the same time, enjoy the panoramic view of the city of Siena from the front side of the church on the Facciata and for the right side of the building.
