Pienza is situated in the center of Val d’Orcia and it achieved the Unesco’s award in 1996. Its history is based on the life of Enea Silvio Piccolomini. He was born on the 18th October 1405 in Pienza, and he became pope with the name of Pio II  in 1458. Pio II wanted to transform the city of Pienza from a little medieval village to a papal residence and for this reason its buildings stick out for their elegance and the Renaissance architecture.

Since 1974 the Fair of Pecorino cheese in Pienza takes place in the beautiful Pio II Square. The six contradas challenge each other in the Game of Cacio al Fuso. The game consists in rolling five kilos of cheese trying to hit a spindle, which is vertically located in the center of the square. Rolling the cheeses down the slopes on the old stony streets of the city center, makes the challenge more difficult.

In the past, cheese factories were not very common and the pecorino was produced in the farms. The “Pecorino of Pienza” is one of the eldest cheeses of the Val d’Orcia, and for this reason it is called the ancient “caseolus”. For its round and small shape, it was commercialized in Pienza and also in Crete Senesi  from the ancient time.

Nowadays, there are six-seven cheese factories, which are producing pecorino and other high quality Val d’Orcia cheeses. At the end of 19th Century the Pecorino of Pienza arrived at the Expo of Paris and also in United States, and its fame raised becoming one of the most famous Italian cheese all over the world.

And what about you? Are you willing to taste the famous Pecorino of Pienza?
