“We want to feel the beauty of the fatigue and the taste of the victory ”

Giancarlo Brocci – founder of Eroica

How was the Eroica born?

The reason why today one can sign up for Eroica 2018 is Giancarlo Brocci, widely regarded as the father of the Eroica, the most famous classical cycling race in the world.

Gino Bartali – Borgo Grondaie

It all began in 1992 when Giancarlo founded the Cycling Park of Chianti, because he wanted to promote the beauty of the Chianti region.

The following year he organized a Grand Fondo Biking Race. It was Gino Bartali (great champion with Fausto Coppi between 1940 and 1954) who made him rediscover the passion for real cyclism, made of fair competition and heroes that maybe now no longer exist.

The Eroica took its first steps in 1997. During this time it has always had the goal of spreading the values of past cyclism, when athletes tried to overcome their physical limits with sacrifice and hard work; when there was respect for their rivals.

At the first Eroica took part only 92 participants. In 2015 (the 19th edition) there were 6200 participants, of which 2,300 from 58 different countries.

A race for everyone – Borgo Grondaie

Eroica is worldwide success that has made countries like Great Britain, Japan, the Netherlands, South Africa and Huruguay host their own editions of Eroica abroad.

Eroica 2018 on October 7th in Gaiole in Chianti remains the true Eroica, the most important one! Another important race is also Strade Bianche. on March 3 2018.

The Eroica route winds through some of the most beautiful roads of the Chianti region, Val d’ Arbia and Val d’Orcia; but what makes it really special are the parts made by Strade Bianche, which allow you to get a taste of the atmosphere of classic cyclism.

For Eroica 2018 you can choose different trails:

EASY TRAIL
This is the simplest and shortest
, about 2 hours of biking and 700 meters of difference in altitude. It is a little taste of the Eroica Dream!

SHORT TRAIL
This is the First Step to the Real Eroica,
4 hours of biking and 1900 meters of difference in altitude; amazing landscape.

MEDIUM TRAIL
This is the mythic Eroica but not the complete one.
It is basically for biking lovers but very trained ones, because you may bike up to 10-12 hours.

LONG TRAIL
More than 3700 meters of difference in altitude and an average time of 15 hours of biking.

Particular attention should be paid to the Eroica Regulation:

You can join the race only with an Eroica bike (vintage bicycles built before 1987) or a vintage bike.

Same goes for clothing: only sweaters and vintage shorts with materials used until the late ’80s are accepted.

No modern wetsuits are allowed. Accessories play a very important role… it’s better if they are creative to respect the spirit of the event!
