The Val di Merse is only 12 km from Siena in the South-West direction on Massetana road leading to Massa Marittima and Follonica.
How can I go biking in Val di Merse ?
Val di Merse is a wide territory, and offers both a long bike road called The Grand Tour of Val di Merse that a series of shorter routes ranging from 20 to 35 km ideal for cycling but also for trekking.
The Grand Tour of Val di Merse was opened in October 2011 and it is a permanent circular route along 147km fully reported with directional panels placed every 10km.
The itinerary begins from the lovely Piazza Marconi in Sovicille, then climb towards Ancaiano step of Crossover to the Celsa Castle and then on to the area of the Colline Metallifere direction Marmoraia and Pievescola. On the SP 541 it moves in the direction of Radicondoli and Montalicinello Chiusdino to make a stop at the beautiful Abbey of San Galgano. The road to Monticiano is linked to Petriolo thermal bath and then continue in the direction of the Vescovado di Murlo and Grotti. From here the route is softened with a quick ride in the plane in the direction of Orgia and Stigliano towards Rosia to ends up in Sovicille.
The beauty of the landscape make a fun and challenging mix of paved and dirt roads that are also part of the big races like the all over famous Strade Bianche.
The roads, for most backroads, far from traffic, allow to ride on natural cycle paths fully enjoying the wild nature of the area.
The altitude of 2500m is well absorbed throughout the journey and for that reason the Grand Tour of Val di Merse is ideal for medium experienced cyclists. In addition to this, on the road signs are written the distances of the following step of the Tour. The choice to make a circular route allows to break up the route into several stages.
Every year a local team bike organizes a MTB race called the Granfondo Val di Merse, now in its 13th edition.
The Grand Tour of the Val di Merse joins major permanent tracks like the Eroica, which make Tuscany one of the regions with the greatest range of cycling routes in Italy
Val di Merse is ideal for sightseeing from the amazing landscape of woods and rivers, to villages and medieval castles, where time seems to stand still: San Galgano Abbey, The Castle of Celsa, the village of Monticiano and Chiusdino and Murlo Castle .
Some roads of the Grand Tour of Val di Merse are part of the famous
Via Francigena, which in the Middle Ages joined northern Europe to Rome through the Val di Merse and leading Monteriggioni and Siena.
