Day trips Siena: Steam Train

The TRENO NATURA is  the name of an Old Fashioned Steam Train in Siena, it became very popular within the locals and tourists thanks to its interesting events and festival as well as the view of the landscapes you can enjoy during the journey.

Infact, every journey of the Steam Train from Siena is related to a food or wine festival in one of the villages down the south of the region (Mostly in Val d’Orcia): la sagra del Tordo in Montalcino, Cheese Festival in Asciano or mushrooms festival in Castiglione d’Orcia near Monte Amiata.

The Steam Train is full of charme. It is a romantic way to take a journey back in time, to the beginning of last century, where the rhythm of life was that of nature, no cars, no internet or mobiles, where the noises of the countryside were the whistle of the train and the songs of cicadas in summertime!

The departure for this extraordinary journey is from the Siena station at 8.30 am (better to check upon reservation the exact departure time which could vary sometimes). Every event or Festival has its own Steam Train journey  and that’s why it is so special. You would feel like privileged people,  because travelling on a Steam Train today, as then, it is an experience that not everyone could have done.

Ideal for families because the train even if noisy, travels at a fairly low speed through the Sienese countryside, giving glimpses of landscapes otherwise
hard to see. In fact, the TRENO NATURA crosses the Terre di Siena on little-used or even abandoned tracks and for this reason, even more rich in charme.

You arrive in Monte Antico or in Buonconvento in the late morning. You always have time to take a walk to the village, an easy trekking for sports lovers (it is worth mentioning that one passes in the Francigena so this activity is recommended), a lunch in local trattorias, a visit to the wine cellars and of course enjoy the festivals
scheduled. We return to Siena late in the evening, slowly, as the train has taught us to do on its journey.
