To make things different this year, why don’t you spend Christmas 2017 in Siena? It is a beautiful town all year round, but during Christmas time it features a unique and festive atmosphere.
The “Christmas 2017 in Siena” calendar is packed with many events to meet everyone’s preferences. As soon as you enter the city center you will find yourself surrounded by beautiful decorations and ornaments, starting with the Christmas tree in Piazza Salimbeni.
What to do in Siena at Christmas time?
The Christmas extravaganza starts the first weekend of December and it lasts until January 2018. The first event is the Mercato nel Campo in Piazza del Campo, (December 2 and 3). It is a huge event for the town, because it resembles the “Mercato Grande” which took place during the 14th century. You will find more than 150 stands selling local products: pastry, cold cuts, cheese and Terre di Siena wine.
Little ones will not get bored, as there are a lot of activities set up for them at the Botanical Garden. From December 2, 2017 to February 24, 2018 at the Santa Maria della Scala Museum there’s the #SIENAFRANCIGENAKIDS, a guided tour of Siena with Nanny Gioconda who tells little pilgrims more about the history of Via Francigena and old tales about Siena. The tour ends in Porta Romana, where they will be gifted a snack.
Jingle Bell Street is an event your kids will adore. Palazzo Patrizi becomes the house of Santa Claus from December 16 to December 23. There are lots of activities planned for little ones, such as the visit to Santa’s Post Office. Before heading home, kids will meet Santa and take a picture with him, after having had a snack with his little helpers. On December 23 there is a concert based on Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Tickets cost 6€ per child, it is free for the first chaperone, and 6€ for the second one.
The SANTA LUCIA LOCAL FAIR (December 13) is a must see Christmas market, located in Pian dei Mantellini, a small village near Siena. It feaures a lot of handmade and homemade products. The traditional terracotta bells are decorated with the colours of the Sienese contrade and they are often gifted, as they are considered a lucky charm for the Palio.
Sport lovers can join the SIENA URBAN RUNNING & WALKING every Thursday in December. You can choose to walk or to run, while discovering more about Siena’s history, art and culture.
From November 2 to December 14 from 9.15pm join SETTE NOTE IN SETTE NOTTI, a musical guided tour of the rooms of the Palazzo Pubblico. Before Christmas Eve there will be many concerts and many plays at “Teatro dei Rinnovati” and, of course, the annual Christmas concert in Piazza del Duomo.
Finally, you don’t want to miss the majestic Nativity at the Station (just 500mt from Hotel Borgo Grondaie). It is a special one since it resembles the artistic style of the 18th and 19th century. December 3-13 only booked tours, December 14 to January 7 open from 10:30am to 12 and from 3.30pm to 7pm.
