2ND DAY – SAN GIMIGNANO – MONTERIGGIONI
Monteriggioni is a typical example of a fortified village. The main square of the town is Piazza Roma. This is the main square of the Castle, which maintains the characteristics of the villages of Tuscany, but from a sense of “country” thanks to the vegetation of the surrounding gardens and orchards, but especially thanks to the green grass that is present in the pavement of the Church and in the spaces between squares paved square.
LEGENDS! It tells of underground tunnels, secret passages, and from the castle can reach the neighboring forts and Siena. Lowering into the well located in the main square you are able to reach the gate and from there you have access to one of the underground tunnels.

PIENZA
The history of Pienza is closely linked to that of Pope Enea Silvio Piccolomini born in Pienza in 1405 and in became Pope in 1458 under the name of Pius II.

Pienza has something very special as many of the streets have romantic names such as: Via della Fortuna (Street of Fortune), Via dell’Amore (Street of Love), Via del Bacio (Street of Kiss).
You can not leave without tasting the famous Pienza pecorino cheese made from sheep’s milk , the most precious among the cheese produced in this area.
Do you know that its particular flavor is due to the rare herbs that grow in this area called Crete Senesi (wormwood, salsify, juniper, birdsfoot trefoil, burnet, …)

MONTALCINO
It is a lovely medieval town with narrow streets and alleyways. Currently famous for its wines among which the most valuable is the Brunello di Montalcino.

Among the churches one that deserves to be visited is the Abbey of St. Antimo. This church is a unique and significant example of Romanesque period. The monastic building was built between the eleventh and twelfth centuries and its grandeur is enhanced by the surrounding landscape, the pleasant valley of the river Starcia in which the presence of the olive tree is the key element .

CASTELLO DI MELETO
In the heart of Chianti, between Siena and Florence, in the town of Gaiole in Chianti is the Castle of Meleto, a stately historic mansion and farm that produces excellent wine. The oldest part of the castle is from beginning of one thousand. The castle belonged to the Benedictine monks and later became the property of the Ricasoli family that after having entered into possession in 1200, has expanded the building in 1700 and turned it into a beautiful country house.
