Are you wondering about visiting Siena soon? Perfect! Give a read to this mini-guide, there are some tips about our stunning city!

1)  The centuries-old origin

Siena has a very long history, dating back to the Etruscan era. Its name probably comes either from the Etruscan Saina/Seina or the Latin Saena Iulia, which means the city has a truly early origin. Though, the main development of the city happened through the Middle-Age, which was its golden age. Then the center was given its present appearance: it is said that Siena, from the top of the hills, was the queen reigning on the area. The uniqueness of Siena lies in its urban peculiar skyline: rich in churches and monuments, Siena distinguishes itself from any other town in the world for the unparalleled devise of its palaces.

2)  It is easy to reach and to visit

Siena is perfectly located in the Tuscan core. The highways which connect the city with both Florence (north side) and Grosseto (seaside) mean that Siena is easily to reach by car or motorbike: also, a bypass which enclose the city ensure the traffic to always be sliding. Once inside, a visit to the whole center only takes a few hours: the city is people-oriented, although to discover all its secrets and attractions a full weekend would not be enough! Its littleness makes the city safe and silent: the dangers and noises of bigger cities will only be a memory!

4) The world-famous cooking

The Italian food is well-known and renowned worldwide:  the Tuscan cooking and particularly the traditional meals of Siena  make no exceptions and are internationally appreciated. One of the best courses you can eat in Siena are the “Pici”, a kind of pasta similar to Spaghetti but quite bigger and larger. Also, another exceptional first course is the “Pappardelle al sugo di cinta” ( “Pappardelle pasta with boar meat sauce”),  or the famous “Ribollita”, a soup made with beans, bread, extra virgin olive oil, savoy cabbage and a bit of legumes.  Beefsteaks of Chianina (the typical cow race of the area) are also incredibly tasty  and are prepared in various ways.

5) The people’s open-air attitude

Generally, people in Siena love to stay  at the open air. Given the warm weather lasting approximately the entire year, people are used to go trekking in the Via Francigena’s paths, have strolls around the city center’s streets and, when the darkness falls, have a Spritz in Piazza del Campo. The natural attitude for Sienese to stay outside makes them sincerely cheerful and pleasant, and always willing to help. The best attitude for a touristic city, isn’t it?

6) The Palio and the various fun events

Siena means Palio: this assumption has spread worldwide.  The Palio is, indeed, one of the main events taking place in Siena, maybe the most gripping and attracting, too. But this wonderful  tradition goes paired with many others events taking place all over the year. Siena offers various theatrical spectacles, great operas, the famous “Bravio delle Botti”, a 1 km race of  barrels in Montepulciano, and the marvelous concerts in San Galgano abbey, where the roof absence makes the atmosphere incredible.
